South Africa’s Sundowns started strong in the African Champions League, beating Mauritania’s Nouadhibou 3-0. The match was held at the Loftus Versfeld stadium in South Africa, as part of the first round of matches in the first group.
Sundowns’ Lucas Costa scored the first goal in the 22nd minute, followed by Peter Shalulile’s goal in the 28th minute. Gastón Sirino added a third goal in the 74th minute, securing a solid win for Sundowns.
Nouadhibou faced a setback when they were reduced to ten players from the 70th minute, after Papa Kar Diop was sent off. This made the match more difficult for the Mauritanian team in their Champions League debut.
The win puts Sundowns at the top of the group, leading on goal difference over Pyramids, who also won their first match against Congo’s Mazembe by a single goal.
Next Saturday, Pyramids will play against Nouadhibou in the second round of the group stage. The match will be held at the Sheikh Bouaydia Stadium, in Mauritania’s capital.
